For the first time, the composers for the Orfeo&Majnun opera: Moneim Adwan, Dick Van der Harst and Howard Moody meet along with the education team of La Monnaie to discover how the songs they composed sound like.

With them was also Peter Spaepen the choir chief.

The idea behind this is that the educational staff would go an train some students to sing along.

Globe Aroma, une association à Bruxelles qui se définit comme un refuge artistique où les demandeurs d’asile et les Bruxellois, où le secteur de la migration et le domaine des arts, se rencontrent, est  une des nos partenaires pour le projet Orfeo & Majnun. Le Vendredi 9 février, 25 membres de la police sont arrivés, sous prétexte de faire un contrôle à l'association, pour demander les documents à tous les assistants: ils ont arrêté 7 personnes "sans papiers", parmi eux, à l’artiste qui exposait.

De Brusselse vzw Globe Aroma krijgt veel steun na de politie-inval van vrijdag. Bij de opening van een tentoonstelling voerden de Brusselse politie en een aantal controlediensten een inspectie uit in het kader van de vzw-wetgeving. Zeven aanwezigen die geen identiteitspapieren konden voorleggen, werden opgepakt.

Passerelles  celebrates the MP2018’s opening by inviting the public to discover Orfeo & Majnun and by proposing several performances : a stroll of the Work Songs choir but also a concert from the Béla Quartet and from the Cadences Tunisian Quartet with orchestra pupils belonging to the conservatories from Aubagne, Pertuis and Vitrolles at the end of the day.

In the frame of Orfeo & Majnun project , La Monnaie is collaborating with workspace for experimental contemporary music and sound art Q-O2 , specifically for their project:

Sound and participation ! 

In a Training of Trainers workshop, Airan Berg, the co-artistic director of the project, will introduce the participants to the methodologies of co-creation to be used in the workshop process, in relation to the stories of Orfeo & Eurydice and Layla & Majnun.

Artists and creative practitioners such as theatre directors, choreographers, video/media artists, musicians, rap artists, hip hoppers, visual artists, etc. are welcome to become members of the artistic pool of raconteurs /workshop animators and to work with citizens on the themes of love, loss, and longing. Participants should be fluent in both Maltese and English, and should read the following synopsis found at this link.

The purpose of these sessions is to select and develop a pool of local raconteurs, working in different sectors/genres and experienced in working in participatory situations, who could take on the role of workshop leaders collaborating with the communities.

The workshop process with the citizens began in December 2017 and will continue, with varying intensities, until the final presentation in mid-October 2018. By the end of the workshop, the artists should be able to:

• introduce the themes and stories of Orfeo & Majnun to the communities;
• develop links between the communities and the project that enable communities to participate, across different genres, in a collaborative co-creation process, that leads to a final presentation of the communities’ contributions in mid-October 2018.

Join an international team of artists in a series of exchanges and be part of a sustainable, long term co-creation with groups of citizens.

Workshop Schedule: Rally the Raconteurs!

Attendance is free of charge.

The raconteurs who will be selected following the workshops will be remunerated for the workshops that they will lead with communities. The schedule of these workshops will be specified once the selection process has been finalised. Final participants will be selected at the discretion of the co-directors. Creatives will be linked to the communities at the discretion of the Foundation and depending upon the exigencies of the project.

The workshop will be taking place on the 15th March 2018, 9am-12pm at 17, Independence Square (It-Tokk), Victoria, Gozo

In conjunction with the Carnival organised by Les Suds in Arles, school orchestras and several chorus will join the parade under the saxophonist Raphaël Imbert, the singer Marion Rampal from the Nine Spirit company and the artists from the Rassegna company, which will also echo the themes of Orfeo and Majnun.

Singers wanted to be part of the choir in the opera Orfeo & Majnun, which is being staged in Malta for the first time at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th October 2018. 

This project is calling for a choir of 80-120 singers which will bring along young and old, female and male individuals from different communities across Malta and Gozo.

The Orfeo and Majnun opera is a special guest of Aix en juin.
As a prelude to the free performance scheduled on cours Mirabeau on July 8, Orfeo et Majnun invites you to take over the “cours” on 24 June 2018 for a large walkabout comprising performances, plastic arts workshops, fanfares and song… forming a large intercultural feast.

Orpheus & Majnun have become the very personification of the beauty and the emotionalizing power of singing, music and poetry. Praise and lamentation, joy and mourning, love, loss and longing are mingled in their poetry, as they live in a transitional paradox presence stretched out between a past conjuringly remembered, and an absence filled with yearning and projections, between memory and dream.

The Musical theatre fusing the two stories, sung in English (Orpheus & Eurydice) and Arabic (Layla & Majnun) will be  interpreted by a narrator/story-teller (in Dutch and French) at The Munt / La Monnaie stage.

The orchestra will consist of both western instruments as well as oriental musical instruments connecting the two worlds.The visual language of the production will use shadow-theater techniques as well as live video images created in real time.

Parade:  La parade d’animaux mythiques prend ses début à la grande place, direction place de la Monnaie. The Orfeo & Majnun project in Malta is looking for Music Instructors to teach groups of their own students one, two or all of the musical interpretations below, which will be featured in the large-scale Parcours/Parade around the streets of Valletta in October 2018. Music teachers/music schools are to choose one of three songs to interpret as they wish, with a group of their students.

Orpheus loves Eurydice, whom death takes away from him. Qays loves Layla, but her father forces them apart. Orpheus will sing of his despair to the wild beasts before going to look for his wife in the Underworld, while Qays becomes “Majnun” – a man literally “crazed” with love – who sings his songs to the animals. Orfeo & Majnun springs from the encounter between an inexhaustible Western myth and a famous Arab legend. This major participative opera draws on professionals and amateurs to create a huge fresco that is also a big party. The opera, performed under the starry sky of Provence, will be preceded by an artistic parade in Aix. A chorus, soloists, orchestras and animals of all kinds will sing of their burning desire. And of a love stronger than despair.

In this Animal Building workshop, we visited the Lifelong Learning Centre Msida as part of the Directorate for Research, Lifelong Learning and Employability, where participants were taught how to build polyethylene animals to be used in the Orfeo & Majnun parade in Valletta in October 2018. 

The O&M project was launched today at Pjazza Tritoni in Valletta. About 3,000 animal puppets, 18 local band clubs, 360 dancers, hundreds of people from various Maltese and Gozitan communities, children, elderly, persons with special needs and many others, will animate the streets of Valletta during Sfilata fil-Kapitali (Parade in the Capital), on Saturday 27th October from 2pm onwards … and everyone is invited to join them!

The Orfeo & Majnun Music-Theatre performance opens tonight in Valletta! We sneaked into last night's dress rehearsal and we must say, everything is looking great!

The Maltese premiere of the Orfeo & Majnun music-theatre performance, which toured the Maltese Islands as part of Valletta 2018, European Capital of Culture, took to the stage on the 19th of October, followed by a second staging on the 20th of October. The performance played to a packed house at one of Valletta’s most prestigious venues, the Mediterranean Conference Centre (MCC).  

On stage, the themes of love, loss and longing intertwined thanks to a multi-layered performance that combined music, opera, choirs, shadow puppetry and projections, bringing to light the parallels between the timeless love stories of Orfeo and Eurydice and Layla and Majnun.

Amidst the show’s many offerings, the surest crowd-pleasers were the consistently atmospheric score that accompanies the lovers’ many trials and, in the background, the graceful movement of a whole menagerie of animal puppets. Lion, bison, elk, ram, ewe, and gazelle oversee Majnun’s heart-rending retreat into the wilderness after social conventions tear him away from Layla. Elsewhere, Cerberus, the three-headed guardian of the underworld, marches on stage to mark Orfeo’s entry into the land of the dead as he breaches the gates in search of his beloved Eurydice.

By the end of the performance, the narrator reminds us that our lovers cannot escape their fate, for it has already been written in the stars. But there is another universal message which accompanies the lovers’ demise: as the narrator points to the stars above, we are also reminded that the power of love and poetry transcend time and conquer all.

Before the curtain call, children who took part in puppet-building workshops rushed down the theatre aisles carrying flocks of butterflies that fluttered like so many tiny souls. Meanwhile, a triumphant Pegasus left the backstage, emerging from the world of shadows to glide to the heart of the stage. The whole cast proceeded to exit from the side wings, gathering beneath Pegasus’ wings for the final applause, a tribute to the massive community effort which went into the local edition of the Orfeo & Majnun project.

Never to be forgotten is the message of Eurydice and her Orfeo, Layla and her Majnun… not only are these myths a testament to the throes of love and the endurance of poetry, but, like the story of Juliet and her Romeo, they are also a plea for change, for peace and solidarity, for the world to choose the path of love.

The show continues into late October, with a fantastic parade that brings Orfeo and Majnun’s animal puppets to life in the capital city. Don’t miss this FREE city-wide celebration where puppets animated by workshop participants take a marvellous stroll through the streets of Valletta. Expect song, dance, short performances, storytelling, and much more at Sfilata fil-Kapitali (Parade in the Capital).

Aufbauend auf dem Vortrag zur arabischen Musik, steht in diesem Workshop das eigene kreative Tun im Vordergrund. Bringen Sie Ihre Instrumente mit und entdecken Sie für sich eine neue Tonsprache!

Das Creative Europe-Projekt »Orfeo & Majnun« folgt partizipativen und co-kreativen Methoden und Ansätzen, die überaus spannend und interessant für die Forschung sind. Nichtsdestotrotz besteht nach wie vor eine Lücke zwischen Forschung und künstlerischer Praxis. Zwar zeigt sich, dass viele Wissenschaftsdisziplinen zunehmend künstlerische Methoden und Tools integrieren, deren Akzeptanz ist jedoch auch aufgrund hoher Fragmentierung der Forschung oft nicht gegeben. Das Panel adressiert neue Wege zukünftiger Zusammenarbeit in interdisziplinärer Forschung und Praxis und diskutiert das Potenzial von Artistic Research und den Transfer in die Praxis.

Hét stadsfeest van Rotterdam in 2019: Orfeo & Majnun

Dogparade 010 sluit op zaterdag 18 mei op een unieke manier aan bij het stadsfeest van Operadagen Rotterdam, ‘Orfeo & Majnun’. Zinge een love song voor je trouwe kameraad.

Liefde, Verlies en Verlangen, thema's die aansluiten bij Opbouwdag, de dag die zijn historie heeft liggen in het verlies van wat was, na het bombardement in Rotterdam.

An verschiedenen Plätzen in Wien können Klein und Groß im Mai und Juni 2019 Masken und bewegliche Tiere wie Schmetterlinge, Delfine oder Raben bauen, mit diesen Choreografien erlernen und die Geschichte von »Orfeo & Majnun« erfahren. In dieser interkulturellen Erzählung, die die griechische Sage von »Orpheus und Eurydike« mit der orientalischen Liebesgeschichte von »Leila und Majnun« verbindet, spielen wilde Tiere eine wichtige Rolle. Sowohl Orpheus als auch Majnun fliehen nach dem Verlust ihrer Geliebten in die Wildnis und zähmen dort die Tiere mit Hilfe von Musik und Dichtkunst.

Die kostenlosen Tierbau-Workshops finden im Rahmen des WIR SIND WIEN.FESTIVAL von Basis.Kultur.Wien statt. Die gebastelten Tiere können mit nach Hause genommen werden. Alle Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer sind herzlich eingeladen, sich mit ihrem Tier am Parcours zu beteiligen.

Sowohl Orpheus als auch Majnun fliehen nach dem Verlust ihrer Geliebten in die Wildnis und zähmen dort die Tiere mit Hilfe von Musik und Dichtkunst.

Die kostenlosen Tierbau-Workshops finden im Rahmen des WIR SIND WIEN.FESTIVAL von Basis.Kultur.Wien statt. Die gebastelten Tiere können mit nach Hause genommen werden. Alle Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer sind herzlich eingeladen, sich mit ihrem Tier am Parcours zu beteiligen.

An verschiedenen Plätzen in Wien können Klein und Groß im Mai und Juni 2019 Masken und bewegliche Tiere wie Schmetterlinge, Delfine oder Raben bauen, mit diesen Choreografien erlernen und die Geschichte von »Orfeo & Majnun« erfahren. In dieser interkulturellen Erzählung, die die griechische Sage von »Orpheus und Eurydike« mit der orientalischen Liebesgeschichte von »Leila und Majnun« verbindet, spielen wilde Tiere eine wichtige Rolle. Auf einem kleinen Jahrmarkt an verschiedenen Plätzen in der Stadt haben Menschen ab sechs Jahren die Möglichkeit, faszinierende bewegliche Tiere und Masken unter Anleitung zu bauen und deren natürliche Bewegungen einzustudieren. Die zugrundeliegenden Sagen »Orpheus und Eurydike« und »Leila und Majnun« werden in diesem Rahmen vorgestellt.

Die in 30 Workshop-Gruppen erarbeiteten kreativen Ergebnisse zu den Themen Liebe, Verlust und Sehnsucht der Oper »Orfeo & Majnun» werden im Rahmen des StraßenKunstFest am Yppenplatz aufgeführt. Außerdem gibt es Tierbau-Workshops, einen Kunsthandwerkermarkt und vieles mehr.

Buntes Treiben am Brunnenmarkt rund um den Yppenplatz mit vielen Geschichten, Musik, Tanz, KunstHandWerkMarkt, Zirkus, Straßen Acts, Crossover, Schaustellerei und Night-Shopping. Die IG Brunnenviertel veranstaltet jährlich unter der künstlerischen Leitung der Brunnenpassage, in Kooperation mit der Gebietsbetreuung GB*, NONO, WKO im Bezirk und vielen anderen das StraßenKunstFest mit zahlreichen Open Air Acts.

Dieses Jahr findet das StraßenKunstFest in Kooperation mit dem Wiener Konzerthaus und BasisKultur Wien/@WIR SIND WIEN.FESTIVAL im Rahmen des EU-Projekts Orfeo & Majnun statt.

Den Abschluss des Projekts bildet das Musiktheater »Orfeo & Majnun«, das am 10. Juni 2019 im Großen Saal des Wiener Konzerthauses aufgeführt wird. Erzählt wird eine Geschichte voller Emotionen über Liebe, Verlust, Sehnsucht und die Macht der Musik.

Im Zentrum stehen Orpheus und Eurydike aus der griechischen Mythologie sowie Leila und Majnun, eine orientalischen Liebesgeschichte. Hier trifft die westliche Welt auf die orientalische und wird miteinander verflochten, indem das Verbindende und Gemeinsame hervorgehoben wird.

Das auf Deutsch, Englisch und Arabisch gesungene Musiktheater bringt nicht nur professionelle Musikerinnen und Musiker und Laien gemeinsam auf die Bühne, sondern auch klassische europäische Instrumente mit jenen der orientalischen Kultur zusammen.

Auch in den Sälen des Wiener Konzerthauses präsentieren einige Workshop-Gruppen ihre Ergebnisse und Ideen zu den großen Emotionen Liebe, Verlust und Sehnsucht. Im Rahmen des Wiener Konzerthaus Parcours können zudem faszinierende bewegliche Tiere und Masken unter Anleitung gebaut werden.
