About the Project

Orfeo & Majnun (O&M) is an inclusive, intercultural and multilingual music theatre project developed with a participatory community-driven approach.

Interdisciplinary by nature, O&M involves multiple art forms, refers to current social, cultural, and urban challenges. It involves communities, professional and citizen artists, and groups in risk of social exclusion.

The ancient Greek myth of Orfeo and Eurydice is fused with the famous Bedouin love story of Layla and Majnun in a multi-facetted workshop process with citizens from all generations and backgrounds. Love, longing, loss, nature, music and poetry are some of the elements imbuing with vitality, passion and humanity these two stories. It’s also a game of duality, of differences and similarities, of exploration of different cultures, parallelisms and specificities.

The Parcours in public spaces (Part 1) is the platform for presentations of citizen created interpretations. Different in each partner city, it will contain interventions developed by citizens of diverse origins, as well as the animal puppets, depicting the animals both Orfeo & Majnun play their music to.

The staged music theater performance (Part 2), written from the perspective of Layla & Eurydice, will combine professional performers and musicians as well as non-professionals, who will participate in the chorus, orchestra, and animate shadows, animal creatures and the live-video. O&M combines occidental and oriental music and myths, considered intangible cultural heritage, to bring people of diverse backgrounds together, locally and internationally.

Join us to create something new.

Valletta

The Valletta 2018 Foundation is responsible for Valletta’s journey towards the title of the European Capital of Culture in Malta in 2018. The programme consists of events and projects developed with various local and international communities. It has been developed organically in preparation for the year 2018.

Its Cultural Programme was devised to explore themes connected to living on such a vibrant island –while the horizon holds the promise of new and exciting connections, the shore draws you back home to a wealth of detail that’s just waiting to be explored.

Malta and Gozo can be likened to tiny but vibrant stages packed with drama, excess and exuberance constantly playing out in close quarters, amid tight-knit communities; all the while, these small island scenarios have co-existed with the comings and goings afforded by our harbours, and today they walk alongside ever-growing international connections.

The strategic geography of the Maltese Islands – which places them right between Europe and Africa – thus puts our communities in a unique position to host such a diverse cultural celebration as the European Capital of Culture. And our Mediterranean style is another valuable feature of the islands’ identity, capable of reaching out to the varied and valuable perspectives that surround it.

To set this journey in motion, the Foundation is to enable social, economic, cultural and environmental growth that will make Valletta a remarkable city.  In doing so, the Foundation outlines four key objectives:

  • To transform Valletta into a creative city
  • To improve the quality of life in Valletta through culture
  • To stimulate awareness of Malta’s cultural identities and
  • To drive collaboration and excellence in culture and the arts in Malta.
